Driving through two giant redwood trees
The first "real vacation" I ever took with the family, as opposed to driving across the country to spend time with my parents and the kids' grandparents, was a trip the boys and I took in 1986, when Michael was eleven (about to turn 12) and Kevin was 10. We drove up California highway 1 and US 101 north of the Golden Gate Bridge to redwood country and the small city of Eureka, California's last major coastal town before the Oregon border. There were many unforgettable experiences in that trip, one of which was driving through two giant redwood trees along "the avenue of the giants," one of which had been split by lightning and had a gate burnt through it wide enough to drive through, and another had a gate cut through through it just to make it a tourist attraction.
