This week's Jonal returns to the 1987
collection. That year, I did the most intense photographic research for travel
articles ever in my life. At that time, most newspapers had fewor nocolor
photographs, so my main research consisted of collecting black and white photos
with a 35mm camera. That was the main
aimof
(and justification
for) the visits my sons and I made
to most of the tourist attractions in and near the Allegheny Highlands. This five-minute
forty-five-second video was all taken from the car (probably because we had no
battery life left for our camcorder and were using the car's battery). Once we
got out of the car, I took dozens of great BW stills of the grounds, some of which
subsequently appeared in tourist features I sold to newspapers, especially the
Cleveland Plain Dealer. This kind of museum has always been one of my favorites,
as one of my boyhood fascinations was life in colonial and frontier times.
Old Bedford Village, just outside Bedford about an hour's drive south of Home
Page Country, captures that experience as well as any place I've visited and I
highly recommend visiting it. The "self-narration" on this video includes
the voices of sons Kevin, then 11; Michael, 13, and yours truly. Jon
