Thomas Sabo, longtime Nanty Glo bankerJanuary 5 2003
Thomas E. Sabo, former assistant vice president and manager of the Nanty Glo office of the U.S. Bank, now AmeriServ Financial, died of a heart attack at his home in Patton on January 3. Mr. Sabo was 82.
Remembered by family members and acquaintances as very active in community work in Nanty Glo, he had worked at the Valley's main banking institution for 43 years. After the bank was struck by flooding in 1977, he was a leader in initiating a flood control project in town. He retired in 1983 and in the following year he moved with his wife, the former Vivian Snedden, to Patton, where he kept busy with gardening. He was afflicted with Parkinson's disease for the past 12 years.
Mr. Sabo was a member of the Army Air Corps in World War II, for which service he earned a Bronze Star. He was a member of the Cambria County Redevelopment Authority for 15 years and was a director of the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown.
Besides his wife, Mr. Sabo is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Schnurr of Belsano, a son, Thomas Richard Sabo of Belsano, and a niece, Diane Carmel. Final arrangements were in charge of Boswer-Ondriezek Funeral Home, 1102 Cardiff Road, Nanty Glo.
