Nant-Y-Glo Tri-Area Museum and
Historical Society update
August 22, 2009
It's no secret the active members of the Nant-Y-Glo Tri-Area
Museum and Historical Society are always busy trying to find ways to
raise funds in order to keep our ongoing Liberty Museum project afloat,
and last weekend's car wash was just the latest project (in a list of
many) to help us raise money for what has become known as the "Cause"
... 'cause the Liberty Museum is so near and dear to our hearts. The
Historical Society "regulars' and a group of Jim Toth's community volunteers
showed up to do whatever, wherever, however we could to make the car
wash a success. To throw some humor into the mix, I dubbed the ladies
of the day; The Maids in the Mist because when I was operating one of
the hoses, no one was safe from the mist. Jim Lauffer, our local roving
reporter showed up to give us some positive press coverage in the way
of photos carried in the August 20 edition of the Journal. Thank
you Mr. Lauffer! Our planning and efforts paid off. At the end of the
soggy day, we had netted $208 in donations. Hmmm...I wonder how many
sheets of drywall $208 will buy?

The next day, John and Helen Dropcho hosted the Historical
Society members at a Sunday afternoon bar-be-que in the back yard of
their lovely Indiana, Pa., home, where we enjoyed good food, good conversation,
and what John called a "Blood and Guts" game of croquet I.e., no rules,
no whining, and no crying. Helen, the croquet champion of the Dropcho
family sat out the game and entertained the faint of heart while the
rest of us were put to shame by John's skill with the croquet mallet
(we were so easily manipulated!). And as one of the guests observed:
"We play well together."
This past Thursday night, the Historical Society had its
monthly "work night" meeting. We discussed some very promising future
fund-raising items and changed the theme of the Historical Society Gift
Shop, currently housed in the Nanty Glo Library, to a more Autumn-like
appearance (well, Renee' Barosky did the more artistic things while
the rest of us functioned as 'assistants' I.e., fetching and go-fer-ing....
You get the picture.lol).
For those of you who don't visit the NTAMHS page on www.nantyglo.com:
plans are to have a separate Liberty Museum website included as part
of the Nanty Glo Home Page. Webmaster Jon has kindly agreed to revamp
the current page and keep the new one updated. Notifications re; the
Liberty Museum website to be forthcoming.
As some of you know, the Historical Society is raffling
off a hand-made queen-sized quilt. Our goal is to raise a much needed
$1,000 to replenish up our always depleting Liberty Museum bank account.
A few of you have already been so kind as to purchase tickets. If any
others would like to contribute to the "Cause," the tickets are $1 each
or 6/$5.00. Cash or checks made out to The Liberty Museum Project are
accepted. Your name and phone number will be written on the tickets.
We will draw the winning ticket the week after Labor Day...probably
around September 10. The drawing will be videotaped and available for
viewing on the GloTube page on Nanty Glo.com. The quilt will be shipped
free of charge to the winner. This is for a good cause, folks. We know
the down-sized economy has affected some people rather adversely, but
if you can see your way to support us in this quilt raffle endeavor
with the purchase of a few tickets, the folks at the Historical Society
would be extremely grateful. My address is: Judy Rose, Box 363, Revloc,
Pa. 15948. Ph: 814-471-0190. Oh..and don't forget; for those of you
planning to come home to The Valley for the 2009 Pizza Party, our projects
manager, Jim Toth, will give a tour of the Liberty Museum Sunday, Sept
20, at 1 p.m.
Below is a scan of the quilt ticket.

Here's something you might enjoy.
