View from (and of) a rock

Having lived most of my life—33 years—in California's Bay Area, it seemed unusual that I'd never made a visit to Alcatraz, the former Federal Penitentiary on a rock island in the San Francisco Bay and now one of the top tourist attractions in that city. So for my birthday (actually today) my sons and Mike's girlfriend Tracy took us there on Monday, our Memorial Day holiday. So though this is not a normal Jonal day, I thought I'd share two of my favorite views from the excursion..

The view above of "The Rock" was actually the final shot I snapped as we returned to our parking garage. The cell house on the island of Alcatraz is seen in the center of this picture. The boat at lower right is the type that ferried us from San Francisco's Pier 39 to the island. The boat ticket included a recorded tour of the cell house (presented in individual recording devices worn over the neck and heard through earphones, so each visitor gets a stereo program including realistic background noises as he tours the prison at his own pace).
As you see, it was a rare perfect day for such a tour as this view of the city, with wildflowers and greenery on the island in the foreground, amply demonstrates. In the center left is seen the Bay Bridge, connecting San Francisco with Oakland. Just below the end of the bridge in the picture perspective (though actually miles closer than the bridge) is a large ocean-going cruise ship, docked adjacent to where our ferry ride began and ended.

Perspectives on aging

The trouble with bucket seats is that not everybody has the same size bucket.

Thought for today

Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die, but long after we are gone be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistence.
