Rose Miners'
Homes...It's safe to say that had it not been
for the various commerical coal mines that once filled Nanty Glo, about half the
homes that are still standing would not have been here. Of course, if there were
no mines, there would have been no work and no need for people and thus no need
for the homes. One of the most densely populated areas of Nanty Glo in the late
teens and early 1920s was the Lloyd, Upper and Lower Christoff, and Metro streets
shown here in a Bird's Eye View. Lower Christoff contained 22 two-story tile dwellings,
each a double house, meaning 44 families lived there. And, we can't forget that
some of them took in boarders. These homes, as well as the eight more tile double
homes and eight wooden single homes on Upper Christoff were all built by the Pennsylvania
Coal and Coke Corp., better known in this area as Webster. There are four one-story
homes, the forerunner of the ranch-style shown center-right in the photo. Originally,
none of these homes had bathrooms, but did have electricity and running water.
The small building shown behind all the homes are the outhouses, and a wood/coal
shed.

And now...
This
how the same area looks today. This photo was taken in 2004 but the general appearance
of this section of Nanty Glo hsan't changed much. You'll note the photo was taken
in early spring when the foliage doesn't obstruct the camera's view.

St. Peter halted a man at the entrance to heaven.
"You've told too many lies to be permittd here," he said.
"Have
a heart," replied the man. "Remember, you were once a fisherman yourself."
