Good Morning Nanty Glo!

       Monday, September 20 2004

Jon Kennedy, webmaster

Happy anniversary to us
(we're No. 1 out of 179,000,000!)

The telegrams from George and Laura, John and Teresa have apparently been lost in transit, so I'll have to ad lib my own congratulations to the Home Page on the occasion of its seventh anniversary. Seven years ago today I was working as a technical writer for a company that had no technical writing to do, so to fill time I looked up "Nanty Glo" on the closest approximation in those days of Google (most likely Alta Vista) and found a half dozen or so references to our favorite town, but nothing actually about it. Thus was born the idea for a Nanty Glo Home Page and before the day was over, its first pages had been put online as an adjunct to my then-faltering Silicon Valley Today website (the "address" at first was www.svtoday.com/nantyglo.htm).

I've told this story here before, but I hope it gets better with age (both mine and the story's). Shortly afterward I bought the license to nantyglo.com, and added major departments for Vintondale borough, Blacklick and Jackson Townships, and Nantyglo, Wales, the UK. Also added early in the venture were major departments for the Nant-Y-Glo Tri-Area Museum and Historical Society and our travel/touring features.

There are two bits of good news for this year's celebration: 1. Google now counts 3,540 pages on the Nanty Glo Home Page site, an average of well over one page every day since the site's launch on September 20, 1997. 2. Google ranks the importance of the Nanty Glo Home Page as five points on a scale 10, which I consider rather impressive when you consider that every city, business, educational institution, church...just about everything in the computer literate world and beyond these days has a web site; a total of some 358,000,000 web pages being indexed by Google.

I guess the "glass-is-half-empty" people will say we're No. 179 million out of 358 million, but I prefer to think we're number one out of the bottom 179 million websites.

Always, I have to apologize for the shortcomings of your webmaster; far more items come to my attention in the course of each year than I can attend to, considering a fulltime job and another major website requiring my attention every day.

And also I have to thank the many friends of the page who make it possible and inspire its constant improvement, and the input of Judy Rose and all those who helped her research and produce the many features she has added, and those who've allowed her and several others of us to take their pictures for web publication; Frank Charney for his weekly features, Barb Hakanen for the "old news" features, and miscellaneous mailings of useful things from Trudy Myers, Mary Ann Losiewicz, Ron Weekes, Rich Dilling, Bonnie Farabaugh, Paul & Caroline Simendinger, Bill Martin, additional members of the email list, many anonymous contributors and sources, those who've helped me update their high school class pages, and anyone else I'm forgetting. Please take a bow, everyone!

And this year we sadly note the passing of one of the Home Page's biggest fans and a frequent contributor of many inestimably valuable items about Nanty Glo and the Valley over the past seven years, right up to just days before his passing, the late George Dilling. He is greatly missed and his contributions will be long, long appreciated.
