play. Children at the Vintondale Homecoming look for coins hidden in the sawdust
pile at the community ballpark and picnic grounds. In the background are food
concessions offering local specialties like piroghis and the building to the right
of the concessions is a new modern restroom introduced this year with help with
county and state recreation funding programs. Watch the Vintondale
home page for an extended photo essay covering the homecoming, coming soon.

Especially after being so tired from a 24-hour ordeal getting from San Jose to
Pittsburgh as described in Friday's
trip Jonal...I sent out that page with an incomplete section (the "Thought
for the Day") and other deficiencies. I don't think we old-timers will recover
the fatigue that ordeal caused us until some time after we're back home in California.
It's the old syndrome, "I just got back from vacation and now I really
need a vacation!"
But on the positive
side (apart from the fact that we needed to pay for one less night in a motel
because we spent that night on a plane), the weather on Saturday was beautiful.
Visibility was long, so that even though there was lots of haze we could also
marvel again at the beauty of Home Page country every where we went. The Homecoming
will be history again by the time you read this, and for the first day it seemed
to be living up to its potential, getting three or four generations of Vintondalers
and former Vintondalers like my brother Bob and me together with old friends and
getting to know some new ones. Though we lean toward the grandparents' generation,
there were lots of elementary and high school children in attendance too, giving
hope that this is a tradition that may be able to survive for some time to go.
People in other countries sometimes go
out of their way to communicate with their English-speaking tourists. Here is
a compilation of signs seen around the world.
Hong Kong: FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, WE RECOMMEND COURTEOUS, EFFICIENT SELF-SERVICE.
From the Soviet
Weekly: THERE WILL BE A MOSCOW EXHIBITION OF ARTS BY 15,000 SOVIET REPUBLIC
PAINTERS AND SCULPTORS. THESE WERE EXECUTED OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS.
Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, happy, and wise.
