Trip photo of the day
from Jon Kennedy

The time was 1:37 p.m.when I got collected enough to get this first photo of our wait in San Jose airport after our plane became disabled by a mechanical malfunction. Brother Bob, standing under the word "Spirit," was taking my picture as I took his.

PENNSYLVANIA TRIP JONAL

Friday, September 3, 2004

San Francisco International Airport (SFO), 9:30 p.m. We were long since scheduled to be in Pittsburgh, but my first day of vacation has turned into a day of frustration. Dropped off at San Jose's Mineta Airport at 10 a.m., we were taxiing toward the runway for takeoff when the pilot announced a warning light was on in the cockpit. We returned to the terminal and waited in line for six hours, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., before we were "cleared for takeoff..." take off from America West airline to United and San Jose's airport to San Francisco's. America West paid for our dinner, sort of (if what you can get in an airport for $7.50 can be called dinner) and for our taxi to SFO and our tickets from San Jose to Pittsburgh by way of Chicago. We're set to depart SFO at 11:50 p.m. for the first leg, and arrive in Pittsburgh at 8:43 a.m., 10 hours behind our original arrival time.

Stuff happens.

"We" are my brother Bob and Glenda, another passenger from San Jose to Pittsburgh who we got to know during the seeming interminable wait through the day.

Foreign approach

People in other countries sometimes go out of their way to communicate with their English-speaking tourists. Here is a compilation of signs seen around the world.

Hotel catering to skiers, Austria: NOT TO PERAMBULATE THE CORRIDORS IN THE HOURS OF REPOSE IN THE BOOTS OF ASCENSION.

Taken from a menu, Poland: SALAD A FIRM'S OWN MAKE; LIMPID RED BEET SOUP WITH CHEESY DUMPLINGS IN THE FORM OF A FINGER; ROASTED DUCK LET LOOSE; BEEF RASHERS BEATEN IN THE COUNTRY PEOPLE'S FASHION.

Thought for today
