It's all about...

The writing. I occasionally encounter a line of thinking that these postcards should all be about the good old days, memories, shared experiences, Blacklick Valley, high school years, record hops, teen canteens, pool parlors, the custard stand, and mom and pop stores and restaurants. I'd agree if I didn't know better. There are some memories in there, in my grey recesses, but it takes a lot to dredge them out. So far, all I've dredged are already on the Home Page, either in the past four-plus years of Jonal entries and articles in the Forum and the Christmas pages.

So, time to come clean. If these entries are about anything, that would be the writing experience it gives me and, if you care to come along, the reading matter it gives you. As often as not it's about inspiration, addressing the challenges facing our culture, and it's borne out of my career in ministry as editor of Christian newspapers and magazines and even a career as a Christian editor of secular newspapers (including the Nanty Glo Journal) and magazines, and as a teacher of writing courses and seminars. Yes, it's about the writing. And yes it's still about ministry, though no longer in any formal or paid vocational sense but rather in the sense that every believer has a calling, a priesthood to live out before God. And my sense of ministry, the ministry of writing, is all about...

Christian writing. To me, Christian writing is not, usually, about Christianity directly, but about the light that Christian presuppositions, biblical precepts, and worldview shines on the times we life in and the problems confronting our generation and the generations to come. It's about...

Salvation. It's about converting our fallen, warped, dysfunctional thoughts, minds, bodies, and spirits to conform with the mind of Christ and the will of our Savior. My purpose is not to convert you through my writing, but to challenge you to think Christianly if you want to be a Christian, or to better understand Christian thinking if your only interest is the Christians in your circle of acquaintances or an even farther removed circle of awareness, however vague. We can talk philosophy, ideas, and propositions forever, but to the Christian, every social issue, every political proposition and candidacy is about salvation. What's the best choice in terms of saving ourselves and aiding the salvation of our neighbors and our neighborhood, whether we're talking about terrorists and elective politics, or sexual revolution and same-sex marriages.

Lenten thought for today

The greatest gift one can receive from God in this world is wisdom, power and will to conquer himself, by denying self-will.
