Notes personal and business

I don't believe I've shared information about my personal current life here for nearly four years, since I trumpeted my hiring as a senior technical writer by a small high-tech company, only to be laid off six months later in one of what seemed endless cycles of "downsizings" here in Silicon Valley that year. I was very fortunate, however, in that my previous job, as a contractor at a much larger company (but which had already enacted a hiring freeze on "permanent" new jobs) was offered back to me. I have been working there ever since, except for several legally mandated short layoffs to preserve my contractor status, and in April I was finally offered actual employment there complete with paid holidays and vacations, and other benefits and perks.

Through the recent economic turndown, my hope and prayer was that I'd be able to keep employed long enough to stretch my Kaiser Health Plan to the age of my eligibility for Medicare at (by a worst-case scenario) 62. That prayer has now been answered by April's great news and my birthday earlier this week. Through six years of uncertainty—working in Los Angeles on Y2k projects that could have severed my contract any week but that lasted 15 months—then new contract employment after only two weeks of hiatus on returning to San Jose on New Years 2000, and basically working ever since, I've been blessed beyond my own expectations.

Though all this news has been good for my personal life it hasn't helped the prospects for the Nanty Glo Home Page and my other website, Xnmp. Both of those were designed as fall backs for me—something at least to keep me busy if I had to start retirement early and possibly even some supplemental income through advertising if needed—but they're not getting the level of nurturing I'd like to provide because with a fulltime "permanent" job, there's not the time that would require.

I'm sure many of you have noticed. The shoddy editing (like sending out Wednesday's June 2 page with Monday's May 31 dateline for one example), slowness in responding to requests for changes on class pages, delaying the announcing of class reunions and creating new pages and many other items. I guess the point of this is just to bring you up to date; my "State of the Home Page" address. We'll continue muddling through as best we can on a "hobby" basis and I'll ask for your indulgence when things don't happen and I'll grumble when you get petulant.

And now you know the rest of the story, for now.
