Good Morning Nanty Glo!

Jon Kennedy, webmaster

This and that

For the second time in less than a year, the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat has revamped its web site. The new look is fresh and looks very professional, with far more features availabe than before. To my dismay, however, whereas registration was optional after the page was also revamped last April, now it's required (but free) to read any news or features. After completing the survey on the first day of the new look last week, giving an enthusiastic thumbs up, I was surprised to find the registration requirement the next day, so sent an email to the publisher to, as it were, rescind my enthusiasm. I got this response:

Mr. Kennedy Ė Thank you for your comments. I wasnít keen on the registration idea, but the concept is that then we can go to advertisers and tell them this many people see this page from this many places, since they think no one reads our site and they donít need to be there. You knew money had to be involved in this somewhere, right? We are working through a LOT of kinks as we kick this thing off and nothing is really set in stone yet, so I do appreciate your feedback. We are also working on a privacy statement that will assure people we arenít going to be spamming you, that makes me nuts and that is not the purpose of the registration.

All of which makes sense and provides some reassurance, so I reconfer my thumbs up. Besides, the Nanty Glo Home Page continues to be the only local outside-Johnstown community page to be listed in the T-D's local links directory.

Not to be outdone...I've been in a redecorating mood at the Home Page as well, inspired first by the great new snow photos Judy Rose provided from last week's blizzard (which, David and Patty Caldwell inform me has been back this week in Home Page Country as well; their new storm photos are linked in the "latest additions" directory above).

So, the front page animation has all new photos since last week. (By the way, if you'd like to stop the animation to have a closer look to a photo, click the red X icon - - above the page in your browser. To restart the animation, click refresh - .) Also, all the roll-over pop-up menus have been trimmed to be more lean and attractive. (However, though they look great in Internet Explorer browsers, the rollovers hardly work at all in Netscape browsers. And even older IE browsers may have problems. If you're using a Windows 97 computer, you may have problems...let me know how it works for you. Click here if you'd like to get the latest version of Internet Explorer, free.)

We recently completed three years of almost daily publication of these postcards since January 21, 2001. Click here if you'd like to review some of the early discussion threads. Even during most of my vacations in those years, except for Internet service interruptions, a major blackup in the Northeast (where I happened to be at the time) and a few other glitches, we've been demonstrating that a Blacklick Valley daily is feasible. Thanks to everyone who's helped, whether with photos and writing contributions, encouraging words, and participation in the email forum.
