Then and Now

Then...

Old bridge, old bank, Nanty Glo...This black and white postcard shows the intersection of Shoemaker, Roberts and Chestnut streets in Nanty Glo, some time in the 1920s. The building of hand-cut stone was built in 1914 by the father of the late Pepe Corti, as the Union Bank Building. The old bridge was replaced in 1958. Remember the tall Greek-like pillars with the milk glass bulb-shaped shades? Apparently there were vandals back then too! (Note the shade at the far right pillar is missing.) The photo was taken from in front of the then St. James Hotel, later Swigle's tavern and lastly the Barbary Coast Tavern and now an empty building. Note there were trees alongside the hotel back then.

Card owned by Don Smith of Johnstown

This how the same building looks today. It is currently owned by Herb and Lori Oldham of Nanty Glo, who hope to open a gift shop on the site upon the completion of the building's renovation.

Greetings from Home Page Country!

From Emporium: the Jim Martin family. Though scattered far and wide, the Martin Family extends to its friends in Home Page Country their sincerest wishes for a Happy New Year!
