Then and NowThen...
Jackson Hotel in Nanty Glo...Visitors to and Blacklick Valley Area may have a hard time finding this three-story, almost block-long Nanty Glo hotel. The Jackson Hotel was located at the corner of Lloyd and Foster Streets, fronting on Foster. It has not been determined when the large white building was erected, but it was under the proprietorship of Frederick Costlow starting in 1908. The hotel didn't occupy the entire block down to what is now called Bank Street, so Mr. Costlow had another, smaller building there that he operated as a garage business. The large hotel and the garage were destroyed by fire in 1919. Shortly after the fre, Frederick Costlow moved to Johnstown where he died in 1933 at the age of 54. Another garage was built on the site and became the Costlow's Chevrolet dealership. The garage eventually came under the ownership of Frank and Leo Kovach of Nanty Glo who continued to operate the automotive repair part of the garage for some years. The former automotive showrooms have since been converted into a ceramics shop operated by Nonie Kovach.

Funny Bones
Sol strictly observed Jewish dietary laws. But one day he went to a restaurant by himself and noticed roast pig on the menu. Just once, I'd like to try it, he thought, and placed his order. The pig was brought to his table with an apple in its mouth. Just then, Sol looked up and saw a member of his synagogue staring at him So I ordered a baked apple, said Sol innocently. Who knew how they'd serve it?
