Frames of reference: conservative/liberal

The following is an attempt to list, compare, and contrast basic characteristics of the liberal and conservative frames of reference. This is, of course, based on my personal understanding of the two sides; your mileage may vary. This is also offered as an explanation of why liberalism as presented here and as it presents itself as the "opposition party" in the present national debate is not an option I could consider following.

Anything goes ("do your thing")Re-establish and hold to standards
Secularism prioritizedSpirituality and moral living prioritized
Totalitarian 'multiculturalism'Cultural pluralism
Fascistic ("bring us together")Pluralistic (honor diverse worldviews)
Promotes racial and sexual diversityPromotes worldview diversity
State- and union-controlled schoolsParental-controlled schools
Sexualizes children (sex education, free condoms in school)Promotes sexual innocence (abstinence education)
Prioritizes sexual liberationPrioritizes family cohesion
Promotes abortion for sexual freedomOpposes abortion as cultural genocide
Separation of church and stateHarmony between faiths and government
Appease Communists and terroristsProactively oppose evildoers
Socialism; tight state control of businessFree enterprise, pro-businesses climate
One-worlders; strenthen United Nations and World CourtStrengthen national security and advance American international leadership

There have been times in my adult life when I've thought the differences between the liberals and conservatives were hardly worth noting, they seemed so close, or that at best the main difference between them is that conservatives move toward the future more slowly. But the directions seem to be veering in distinctly different directions now. The current issue of Time Magazine (which I have scanned but not read at this writing) seems to be delving this change of the rules of engagement (for lack of a better way to describe this phenomenon).

I'll try to "unpack" some of these comparisons/contrasts before we turn to the Christmas focus of these postcards. As always, input from all is welcome, either directly to the email list or to me for consideration in the permanent Home Page record.

Fun facts (or "facts," so it says, but take with a grain)

Michael Jordan makes more money from Nike annually than all of the Nike factory workers in Malaysia combined.

One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today is because cotton growers in the '30s lobbied against hemp farmers—they saw it as competition.
