Fourth Reunion Record Hop planned;
will be in September this year

Diane Holby writes:

It's that time of year again, when we are making plans for the Fourth Miner's Hall Record Hop Reunion. We've decided to change the date to September 20th, in hopes that the weddings, class reunions, vacations, and family reunions will be over and since the firehall doesn't have air conditioning, it won't be as hot inside or out. This year, I'm asking for your help again to get the word out to all those old record hop goers, who might like to come home for the dance. We have a few different things I want to incorporate into this year's dance, including more oldies music. We found some great old songs that we want to play and we're playing nothing but oldies ('50s-early '60s). We have some new props to make the atmosphere even more realistic and we're working on some other things, too.

The tickets are still going to be $10 a person. That includes refreshments, admission, and prizes. We'll have some dance contests and some other giveaways. The charity host this year will again be the Nanty Glo Fireladies Auxilary. We're selling tickets in advance and are selling only 300. You can send for tickets by sending a check or money order and self-addressed stamped envelope to Sally (Gibson) Warynovich, 1285 Johnson Street, Nanty Glo, PA 15943, phone 814-749-9048. Or Diane (Waldron) Holby, 1063 Vine Street, Nanty Glo, PA. 15943, phone 814-749-9738. Or Shirley (Bracken) Kozlovac, 1270 First Street, Nanty Glo, PA 15943, phone 814-749-9958.

We'd like to see new people there and make this a great annual event for people from the area to come and see friends, relatives, and classmates that they don't get to see often. As we get older in years, our roots become more and more precious to us. So, I hope to see a lot of new faces this year to join in the fun of capturing a night from the past!

Another major Johnstown company going, gone

Last Thursday's Tribune-Democrat reported the demise of what the writer called "Johnstown's nameplate company," Crown American Realty Trust. Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust of Philadelphia has offered $381 million in stock to buy Crown American's holdings, which sale is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The loss of 134 jobs at Crown American's showplace headquarters in the center of downtown Johnstown is being projected. Crown American was a Johnstown-born company, founded by the late Frank Pasquerilla, who began business as a building contractor in the region. The major asset of Crown American being acquired by PREIT is 26 shopping malls, in 10 states, including Logan Valley Mall in Altoona and Nittany Mall in State College.

See this index on the Tribune-Democrat website for additional information on the loss of Crown American and other companies to the area.
