Good Morning Nanty Glo!

Jon Kennedy, webmasterAll complaints graciously received

Complaints against the Home Page and especially this department have, of course, day-ruining consequences, sometimes even week-ruining effects, and that's probably what the complainers are aiming for. (But I hasten to add, most friends of the page and the great majority of subscribers to this list are not complainers, which fact continues to sustain this effort.)

When we Vintondale-Red Mill Road Kennedy boys deigned to complain about the quality of anyone's public offerings, our dad's most frequently heard rejoinder was, "I'd like to see you do it any better." That gives small comfort when people let it be known that they dislike certain topics I entertain here or wander into too frequently for their liking: Let them put up or shut up; let us see them do it, or do anything literarily pertinent, better. Or as another great Irish-American ugly-head*, Conan O'Brien, repeatedly tells his audiences when they boo a failed punchline or when his comedic expressions wander too far from good taste, "You got in free; you don't have a right to complain." Everyone gets into the Home Page free, these subscriptions cost you the click of a mouse button; maybe those who are unhappy with us would be happier over at Ebensburgpa.com?

I would, of course, prefer to have a heart-stirring reminiscence of a different event from our Valley days every day as the fare here; I wish my memory even contained that many discrete memories. I would love being a raconteur able to regale you every day, but have never imbibed that much alcohol. I would prefer that my "religious" literary connections would be inspiring and equally seen as profound epiphanies by everyone, but know too well that anything even suggesting "religion" or a spiritual side to life turns off some readers, and on some days that's more true than on others. Sorry; you get what you pay for.

I do know that the dedication it takes to have worked every day, 365 days a year for nearly six years now on the Home Page, and well into three years now on the Jonals/Postcards, takes a toll. I know I've begged, pled, and cajoled to get those not seeing what they want here to let me know what they would like to see, or put their own contibution here for public consumption. That's produced some encouraging response, but has not eliminated complaints. I also know that the areas in which I have enough expertise to say anything—much less something scintillating, inspiring, and even nonoffensive to all—is highly limited.

And I also know I have no idea how long I will be able to keep spreading my small pile of fertilizer thinner and thinner.Conan - grotesque mellon?

Webmaster Jon Kennedy

*Kennedy, Cean-nai-deach in the Irish language, Gaelic, means "ugly head." Conan O'Brien frequently refers to his own head as a grotesque oversized "mellon."

Aiming to please

This week, our phones went dead and I had to contact the telephone repair people. They promised to be out between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. When I asked if they could give me a smaller time frame, the pleasant gentleman asked, "Would you like us to call you before we come?" I replied that I didn't see how he would be able to do that since our phones weren't working. He also requested that we report future outages by email (Does your email work without a telephone line?).

Thoughts for today

Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

Follow the three Rs: Respect for self; Respect for others, and Responsibility for all your actions.
