Where are they now? Jennifer Gallagher

Jackson Township native Jennifer "Jen" Gallagher was born October 7, 1970 to James and Joann (Ringler) Gallagher. Her five brothers and sisters include Patrick, Michael, and Gwen, all of Jackson Township, along with Beth Ann Lauer and Pam Stager who live in the Harrisburg area.

Jen is a 1988 graduate of Bishop Carroll High School where she was a member of the basketball squad and school marching band.

While working as a nurses aid, Jen decided the nursing profession was her calling and enrolled at Harrisburg Area Community College where in 1995 she completed her Licensed Practical Nurse schooling. Then to further enhance her nursing skills and credentials, she again enrolled at Harrisburg Area Comunity College, this time to become a Regstered Nurse.

A member of the U.S. Army active reserves since 1996, Jen's nursing education was interrupted when in April 2002, her unit was activated and deployed to Afghanistan where they assembled a complete military field hospital that included operating rooms along with eye and dental clinics. "Our hospital resembles somewhat a 'Mash Unit,' but with all the latest equipment and technology in the field of medicine," she said in a Nanty Glo Journal article. "It was hard leaving our hospital behind when we left to come home."

Of her military experience in war-torn Afghanistan, Jen says, "We had some tough times; we became like one big family. I had lots of brothers and sisters and even some moms and dads among our group. There were times when we cried together, but we had times when we laughed together, too."

And how did the Afghan terrain compare to the green rolling hills of Pennsylvania?

"It's just a lot of sand...it's like a beach without water," she says.

Jen currently holds the military rank of sergeant, but upon successful completion of the state licensure exam for Registered Nurses, she will be awarded the rank of Lieutenant in the active reserves.

"She's her own person," says her mother Joann, "She's very caring and determined to succeed and I'm very proud of her achievements. What she's got...she got on her own. My hope is that she'll just be happy."

With her six-month Afghanistan tour of duty behind her, Jen is now back home in the Harrisburg area and nursing full-time at Harrisburg Hospital and working part time at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill.

Thought for the day

You can learn new things at any time in your life if you're willing to be a beginner. If you actually learn to like being a beginner, the whole world opens up to you.
