Photo of the week
This week's photo by Judy Rose

The Old Swimmin' Hole This photo was a special request from a Nanty Glo List member...and rather than write a caption for the photo, I decided to solicit memories from a few of the people who enjoyed a swim in the cool water below the bridge at Adams Crossing:

It brings back a lot of memories. We had no pool in NG when I grew up and we used to hitch hike on the corner below the old high school to get to Adam's Crossing. Often we would get as far as Belsano and have to hitch hike again and then we might be let off at a dirt road that was about a two-mile walk to the stream. It wasn't much of a swimming pool and the only diving board was off of the bridge. If you hit right, you would find a depth of about shoulder height. If you hit wrong, it was a busted head. Nonetheless, you always tried. It was really sort of a dangerous place, but at that age, who cared? ***

I remember frequently swimming at Adams Crossing. The brave or foolhardy boys would dive off the Adams Crossing bridge. I never had the courage to follow them. During each summer, I eagerly awaited my father's daily work shift at Heisley Mines to be completed so that he could drive me and several friends in his red Chevy so that we could go swimming. All the kids gathered at my home late in the day in anticipation of this event. My popularity at this time soared for some reason. While diving, my father once scraped and cut his scalp on one of the many stones in the water. The experience abruptly ended the swimming trips, and my popularity also took a nosedive— pardon the pun. Do you think my popularity was somehow associated with the kids getting a free ride to the distant swimholes? I was always puzzled. ***

I remember the water as being very cold! We had plenty of fun just swimmin' and splashin' around, and getting muddy! ***

*** If you have a wish to see a place from the past that holds special memories, please contact me at HRoses2@peoplepc.com. If I can manage to get the photo, I'll be happy to accommodate your request. —Judy Rose

Stats

I just read that last year 4,153,237 people got married. I don't want to start any trouble, but shouldn't that be an even number?
