Ready for the Firemen's Convention in Barnesboro

Many prizes have been brought to Nanty Glo through the years by the local firemen and auxiliary for their participation in annual conventions of the Volunteer Firemen's Association. The photos above show the local group as they appeared in the 1939 convention held in Barnesboro. The local volunteers won three prizes as the best-appearing auxiliary in the line of march. Fireman standing at the right in uniform is T. P. Burns. Kneeling is Harry Callaway. The dog belonged to Harry's father and the truck is the 1927 LaFrance. The woman second from right in the auxiliary photo is Sara Horn, who served as president of the group. Mrs. Horn held the longest tenure of any president in the auxiliary.

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Nanty Glo Volunteer Fire Company was organized on Feb. 9, 1927, with 44 members. Founding officers were Mrs. H. D. Metzler, president; Mrs. Martin McDermott, vice president; Mrs. William Patterson, recording secretary; Mrs. E. C. Davis, financial secretary, and also Mrs. A. A. Dietrich.

Firemen's threatened walkout averted

from the Johnstown Tribune

NANTY-GLO, NOV 24 - A threatened strike of the Nanty-Glo Volunteer Firemen's Association was believed averted here today following a meeting of the firemen and the Nanty-Glo Borough Council last night, at which time a temporary 'truce' was effected.

Nanty-Glo Borough Council last week awarded contracts to the Republic Fire Hose Company, the Quaker City Fire Hose Company and the Fabric Fire Hose Company for the purchase of 750 feet of fire hose at a price said to have been $800.

The firemen lodged a protest against the purchase of hose from two of the successful bidders claiming that the couplings would not be suitable, inasmuch as they would be manufactured by three different machines and would not fit properly.

Council heard the complaints of the firemen, who allegedly told the borough fathers that they would refuse to answer any alarms after December 3 unless the action of council was rescinded. Meeting with other volunteer companies in Cresson Thursday night the Nanty-Glo representatives are said to have been told the other companies also would refuse to answer fire calls here in the event of a walkout by the local members.

Council agreed to abide by the decision of the firemen as to the kind of hose to be purchased but expressed the belief that, inasmuch as contracts had been awarded, they would be unable to cancel them.

Council, however, agreed to permit the volunteer firemen to write the cancellation orders. The borough seal will be affixed to these cancellations, it was said, in an effort to bide by the decision of the firemen. The firemen agreed to remain on the job as a result of the outcome of last evening's meeting, starting that council had displayed its willingness to cooperate and that the firemen would accept the hose in the event that the contracts cannot be canceled.

More memories of the fabulous '50s (last of series)

Here are some other things I would have told my son about my
childhood if I had figured his system could handle it.

In those days, parents were expected to discipline their kids. There was no interference from the government, "Social Services," or "Family Services." They had not been invented (the ninth and 10th amendments to the constitution were still observed in those days)

Thought for the day

I cannot show you my God, but I can show you His works. "Everything was made by him" (John 1:3). He created the world in its newness, He who has no beginning. He who is eternal, created time. He who is unmoved, made movement. Look at His works and praise their maker.
