Martha Rummel: Blacklick Twp. 'matriarch'

Martha (Paul) Rummel, described as the matriarch of five generations of one of Blacklick Township's well-known pioneer families, died May 14, 2002, in Johnstown at age 88. A Colver resident at the time of her death, she was born July 18, 1913, in Nanty Glo, a daughter of David and Frances (Kick) Paul. She had been the widow of Paul William Rummel, who died in 1952, one of Blacklick Township's well-known lumbermen. She was for a time (late 1960s-early '70s) the proprietor of Belsano's Triangle Restaurant.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Rummel was preceded in death by her parents, by sisters Josephine Paul, Catherine Buffoni, Marie Straple, and Violet Paul; a brother, William "Peck" Paul, and grandsons Kellen Peach and Ward Cochran. She is survived by these children: Elaine Kerekes and special friend, Tunis Clawson, Homer City; David James and wife, Shirley, Point Clear, Ala.; Gary P., Middleburg, Fla.; Elsie and husband, Roy James, Colver; Tyson and wife, Dorothy, Strongstown; Violet "Polly" Brawley and special friend, David Teeter, Colver; Martha "Trudy" Myers, Mundys Corner; Robert A. and wife, Donna, Bainbridge, Pa., and Thomas W. and wife, Delores, Mundys Corner

She is also survived by 39 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren and a sister, June Miller, White Mill. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mrs. Rummel was a graduate in the first class of St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in Nanty Glo. At the time of her death, she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Colver, where she served as eucharistic minister and lector. She was also a member of the Legion of Mary and the Ladies Sodality. She was honored in a tribute for Mother's Day, 2001, on the Home Page by her daughter Trudy Myers.

Funeral mass was at Holy Family church, Colver, the Rev. Bernard Grega celebrant. Committal was at Holy Family Cemetery, Colver.
