Heisley Company Store remembered
Letter No. 90 | March 20, 1999
When I left Nanty Glo, the American Legion was in the building where the Heisley Store [had been] located. My husband remembers Garis Meat Market next door, which became Misner's T V. [A] Dr. Miller had a dentist office a few doors away, which later became Nanty Glo's first library. When you shopped at the Heisley Store, each department was separated, and when you made your purchases, they would fill out a slip, put it in a clip, pull a cord and it would be transported to the balcony where all the accounting was done and the receipt was then sent back down.
Most of the mining families owed their souls to the company store.
