What happened to Nanty Glo's trees?

Letter No. 219 | January 15, 2001

Thanks to Fran Wojtowicz Ward for her memoir about Vintondale.

I was particularly interested in her memories of the "big beautiful trees in many of the front yards and so many fruit trees in the backyards." Growing up in NantyGlo in the 1950s, I also recall many trees. However, during my annual visits to N-G and surrounding areas over the last 24 years, I am struck by the obvious disappearance of large shade trees and fruit trees. Many of the yards and streets are barren of trees.

What happened? I suggest a shade tree committee to develop and activate a replanting program of native shade trees (and fruit trees?) in the municipalities.

Fran, are those trees still in your old yard and in the town of Vintondale? I have no idea who will be reading this. I would appreciate a reply by the webmaster, please.
