Memorial to Kathryn E. Stefanak Letter No. 202 | October 15, 2000
Among the Nanty Glo Forum articles is a colorful, entertaining memoir describing the earlier days of Nanty Glo written by Francis J. Stefanak. For example, he recalled, like many old Gloers, the Heisley Mine whistle blowing in the early evening to indicate that work was scheduled for the following day. Unless totally indigent, I don't know if a coal miner enjoyed the sound of that whistle or not.
Francis J. Stefanak had fond memories of his youth in Nanty Glo and expressed them in his forum article. Most of his career was spent in law enforcement with the FBI. He resided in Alexandria, Virginia, and passed away in March, 1999, at the age of 86.
Recently I noted in the Washington DC area newspapers that his wife, Kathryn E. Stefanak (formerly Kathryn Taubler of Greensburg), passed away on October 10, 2000, at a nursing home. She was the mother of Andrew J. Stefanak, Suzanne Furey Craven, Kathy Carlon, Priscilla Emens and Cindy S. Wiles; grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of five; sister-in-law of Katherine Trombley who resides in Nanty Glo. Also survived by several nieces and nephews (among them, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Millward of Nanty Glo).
She will be viewed on Sunday, October 15 at a local Alexandria funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, October 17, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria. Internment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery next to her husband.
