Letter No. 189 | August 13, 2000
Thanks for putting your thoughts on the web—I've enjoyed reading them. I enjoy travelling also—so far, my favourite destinations have been in the Middle East. The change of culture was illuminating! From the positive experiences I've had in Turkey/Syria/Jordan/Lebanon/Egypt, I hope to carry on in Pakistan and Iran, with perhaps a trip along the Karakoram highway into China.

I agree with your philosophy of travelling in Economy. I think more of the culture can seep into the experience, something which tends to become more hidden as the price of the hotel increases. That sort of travelling is so much easier now, too, because of series of books like 'Lonely Planet' which contain vital information to smooth the path, and maximise the experience.

Best of luck with your future travels,

Alex
