Historical Society inaugural successful

Letter No. 174 | April 27, 2000

We had 12 people at the first Historical Society meeting tonight. One problem is finding the right name for the Historical Society...people from Jackson Township want to get involved, so it was a little difficult.

“Blacklick Valley” sounds too much like the school district, “Nanty Glo” is not inclusive enough...I am sure it will come, but right now everyone is thinking.

Among attendees: John Kupchella, Greg O'Farrell (who has collected lots of pictures and so on), John and Helen Dropcho, Donna Davis, Rich (Hakanen, the author's spouse), I, and several others.

It was a good meeting but it is hard to know what to do first. I am very happy to see so many people involved.

We are going to get the school kids involved right off the bat, by asking them to design a logo, one that will show the Lumbering, Farming, and Coal Industries of our area. I will keep you posted....

Our next meeting will be May 11 at 7 p.m. at the Library.

Barbara Hakanen

Webmaster's note, the previous letter describes the plans for the society and announced its first meeting.
