Mission
Statement
Our
mission is to preserve and transform the former Liberty Theatre
Building (erected 1920-21) into a regional museum showcasing the
once-thriving coal mining industry of Nanty Glo, Blacklick and Jackson Townships,
and Vintondale. The museum will educate visitors about
the area's varied ethnic cultures, and the economic hardships shared
by mining families during most of the period when "coal was
king" in the region.
Historical
photographs, artifacts, and private collections will be used to
re-create that era. Other media including video, newspapers, books,
websites and oral histories we will be offered to educate visitors
about our cherished family life, faith, and heroes.
Our
goal, through all of this, is to help both local residents and out-of-area
museum visitors find a connection between their lives and the lives
of struggling mining families during the 1920-1940’s, one not fully
understood or appreciated by today’s general public.
