Joseph Francis Olsavsky, 59, a Nanty Glo native who graduated from St. Mary’s Parochial School and Nanty Glo-Vintondale High School (1962) died Monday, May 10, 2004, at his home in St. Clair Shores, Mich., where he had been a resident for 36 years. Born February 13, 1945, in Johnstown, Mr. Olsavsky was retired as a sprinkler fitter and was a member of Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 704. He was also a member of St. Germaine Church; Leo XIII Knights of Columbus Council, St. Clair Shores; the American Legion; Bruce Post 1146 VFW; and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. An avid golfer, he had been a baseball coach at St. Gertrude Church and a member of the Karmanos Institute patient committee.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, (St Clair Shores) and children Claudia (Rich) Jolly (Howell, Mich.), Rob (St Clair Shores), Chrissy (Taiwan), Colette and Jesse (both St Clair Shores); grandchildren, Christian Olsavsky and Julia Jolly; mother, Margaret; siblings, Mike (Maria) Burke, Va.; Larry (Martha), Hastings; Bernadette (Thom) Palko, Virginia Beach, Va.; Francis, Ebensburg; Anthony (Georgina), and Celeste, both Nanty Glo; Andrea (Rick) Olivieri, Brussels, Belgium; Danny (Melodye), Fords Corner; Greg. Laurel, Md, and Kevin (Yvette), Vintondale, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Germaine Church, St. Clair Shores, with the Rev. James Bjorum officiating. A memorial service was held on May 22 at St. Mary's Church, Nanty Glo. The family suggest memorial contributions to the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
