Good Morning Nanty Glo!

Pre-retired

I'm temporarily unemployed, beginning this week and through the end of the year, pending some unexpected development(s). Under the government rules for contracting, my eligibility ran out last Friday, and I have to wait 90 days, which is right at Christmas, to become eligible for a new contract with my current contractee. But my supervisors assure that I'll be back as of New Years.

Of course a writer is never unemployed. Salaryless and broke, often, but unoccupied, never. There's always the Ireland travel book I've begun, for which I've been hoping to get a block of time to get deeper into. I'd like to get an advance to spend a month or more in Ireland getting the data and more photos, but I don't expect it to happen before Christmas.

I hesitated to share this with the list, knowing also how far behind I am on updates to the Home Page. There are dozens of little items waiting to be added, mostly to class lists and the "Looking for" page. And as the first week of my hiatus ends, I have to admit that lethargy has been a great enemy to productivity. I begin my days at Starbucks ("of course," those of you who pay attention are thinking), and while there the first two days I just read. Good reading, Elder Barsanuphius of Optina, to be sure, but not immediately or socially productive. (Although—here's a writer's equivocation—the reading may be credited with giving the impetus to yesterday's entry, which may or may not be socially redemptive.) And, at least, I've been taking my laptop along to Starbucks for these past two days, where that was produced and this, as of this writing, is in progress.

This being a kind of catch-up, it's probably the best place to wish ourselves happy anniversary. We consider September 20 to be the date of the launch, first, of the Teen Events column in the Nanty Glo Journal in 1957, and second, the Nanty Glo Home Page in 1997. The page was introduced then as an "anniversary gift" to the community marking the 40th anniversary of my entrance into "professional" journalism. And in doing so, thanks once again to everyone who helps make this totally nonprofit site possible and, in my humble opinion, the best community website on the Internet (I have to say it as no one else will). So: Judy Rose, David and Pat Caldwell, Barb Hakanen, Brandon Williamson, Trudy Myers, Mary Ann Losiewcz, Jim and Judy Martin, Frank Charney, Ron Weekes, Tim McCullough, everyone who's written and sent comments, ideas, and material, and everyone I'm forgetting, please take a bow. (In case anyone is wondering why Mike Harrison wasn't listed...though his stuff appears as much as anyone else's...he sends it to me personally and the dozens of others on "his" list and, so far as I know, he's not even aware it gets reused here. And none of it is original with him, so far as I can tell.)

T-shirt sayings

1) I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
2) I work hard because millions on welfare depend on me.
3) Some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them. 4) I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.
5) Don't take life too seriously. You won't get out alive.

Thought for today

A story is told about William Jennings Bryan, that great American orator and defender of the faith. As he was having his portarit painted, Bryan was asked, "Why do you wear your hair over your ears?"

Bryan responded, "There is a romance connected with that. When I began courting Mrs. Bryan, she objected to the way my ears stood out. So, to please her, I let my hair grow to cover them."

"But that was many years ago," the artist said. "Why don't you have your hair cut now?"

"Because," Bryan winked, "the romance is still going on."

Can that be said of you and me in our relationship with Christ?
