of news affecting Blacklick Valley

Blood mobile

Those of you still living in and around the Blacklick Valley and still able to donate blood will have the chance to do so on Monday, June 23, at the Nanty Glo Fire Hall. Just this week, the National Red Cross put out a special alert because of low blood supplies. So, no matter what community you may live in now, the need is there and so is a place to make your donation. Check out your local media for time and location and give the gift of life, a pint of blood.

Rally in the Valley

The Nanty Glo Auto Parts, LaMantia’s Garage and the Coal County Auto Club sponsored a show of antique and classic cars on June 8 that drew a sizable crowd. This rally allows those enthusiastic about restoring old cars to show off their handiwork and brings visitors to town. Foodland and Al's Six Pack To Go helped with refreshments.

Work continues at the intersection of 271 and 422 in Belsano. Even though there is still much to be done, travelers turning west on 422 from 271 have noted that they feel much safer not having to strain to look over their right shoulder to check for traffic coming from the east. Meanwhile, Nanty Glo got a taste of things to come. A construction crew began working on a drainage pipe project at the foot of Pergrim Hill this week. As usual with such projects, there were traffic delays and a lot of dust and dirt. This is the beginning of a project that will eventually see Route 271 widened to accommodate turning lanes and curbs along both sides of the highway. The goal sounds great but its achievement will mean a lot of mess and inconvenience for the residents and businesses along Shoemaker Street.

Firemen’s Fair

The Nanty Glo Volunteer Fire Company couldn’t have asked for better weather for its annual fund raising fair. The event includes rides for the kids, a bar in the basement of the fire hall, and there will be the usual large parade on Saturday.

You may be a redneck if... (2002 edition, series)

You think the Nutcracker is something you did off the high dive.
The Salvation Army declines your mattress.
Your entire family sat around waiting for a call from the governor to spare a loved one.
You offer to give someone the shirt off your back and they don't want it.
You have the local taxidermist on speed dial.

Thought for the day

In every man there is a loneliness, an inner chamber of peculiar life, into which God only can enter.
