Ice cream war

With summer fast approaching, the competition among ice cream stands is getting as hot as the weather. Leading the way with a long established clientele and location is the Krispy Kream in Belsano. Then comes the double dip from dairy Queen with stands in Ebensburg and Park Hill. And next in line is The Meadows on the Ebensburg Mini Mall Road. Although this stand is new to our vicinity, it opened with a proven record in Central Pennsylvania for serving delicious ice cream. John Hamula had plans to be the next competitor in the war; however, his entry was delayed by a severe storm that toppled his partially completed building. A work crew is hard at work to put the building back together. Meanwhile, the Krens’, owner-operators of the DVO, have chosen to enter the fray with help from out of state. They have imported a red caboose that it had previously served as an ice cream parlor in New York. Workers are quickly getting the new ice cream Stan ready for business. Of course, the real winners in this war will be local residents. On a hot summer day, it will no longer be necessary to take a shortcut through Belsano to get to Mundys Corner. On the other hand, those plagued by indecision may have a miserable summer. For those individuals who can’t make up their minds, we offer this solution: try them all.

Belsano

Judy Rose’s photos show the progress of the work at the intersection of routes 422 and 271. Although the construction has caused delays and bottlenecks for locals as well as those passing through, the safety achieved will make the inconvenience worthwhile. Also, the added trails should be a boon to tourism.

More rain

Although not as severe as in May, storms continue to dump rain on the Blacklick Valley and the rest of central Pennsylvania. Several inches of rain fell this week and flooded many basements and washed out a few driveways. Nevertheless, when local residents look east and note that those counties are still under drought conditions, they are thankful for the rain.

In-flight funnies (series)

In light of all the recent air security that's been put in place, crew members try to lighten the mood. Here are (allegedly) real examples of how they make the in-flight "safety lecture" and their other announcements a bit more entertaining.

An airline pilot wrote that on a particular flight he had landed his plane into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy that required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying XYZ airline." He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally, everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?"

"Why no, ma'am," said the pilot. "What is it?"

The little old lady said, "Did we land, or were we shot down?"

Thought for the day

Formerly, when religion was strong and science weak, men mistook magic for medicine; now, when science is strong and religion weak, men mistake medicine for magic.
