Good Morning Nanty Glo!

Welcome, Jackson Township pages

At first, I wasn't inclined to include a Jackson Township department as a necessary component of the Nanty Glo Home Page. Unlike the three other departments—Nanty Glo borough, Blacklick township, and Vintondale borough—Jackson Township's school students don't attend classes in Nanty Glo. Probably as importantly to me but no one else, I know precious little about Jackson Township, so I had no lore to share.

But I've learned lots of mind-changing facts. I think the first big wedge in my brain came from coming to realize that the highway between Twin Rocks and Vintondale is in Jackson, not Blacklick, township. Even then, I thought, "no one lives there, so it doesn't matter." But the realization that the southern and eastern borders of the Nanty Glo branch of the Blacklick Creek, once it's outside the borough limits, is Jackson Township is to realize that the "valley" is verily formed by that township's properties. And I knew all along that Nanty Glo grew up on both sides of the creek, both Jackson and Blacklick Townships. Two of its first schools were even called the Jackson and the Blacklick schools. Even more sobering was coming to realize that almost all of the residential portion of Vintondale is in what was Jackson Township before Vintondale was incorporated (I believe, still, that the Eliza Furnace and the row of houses west of the Blacklick Creek bridge, including the one I used to live in, are in what was formerly Blacklick Township, being on the north side of the creek).

But Jackson Township residents were active in the Nant-Y-Glo Tri-Area Museum and Historical Society from the first. The only church, via a member, that proactively requested a listing in our church pages was a Jackson Township church, St. Paul's Lutheran, which continues a one-time Nanty Glo congregation and draws the Lutherans from the rest of the Valley to its communion. Probably most importantly, the two contributors most active in supporting this project are Jackson Township natives. David Caldwell, though "virtually" living in Nanty Glo, legally lives over the township line in Jackson Township. Judy Rose now lives in Revloc, but grew up in Jackson, even beyond Mundy's Corner. But her teen memories are largely of Nanty Glo dances, pizza and pop restaurants, and friends, as mine are as a Blacklick Township resident in that formative part of my life.

So, today we "formally" introduce our new Jackson Township department, with its own pop-up menu of pages on the front page navigation bar. I hope more Jackson friends will get involved and share more memories, facts, and attractions of their corner of the world.

In-flight funnies (series)

In light of all the recent air security that's been put in place, crew members try to lighten the mood. Here are (allegedly) real examples of how they make the in-flight "safety lecture" and their other announcements a bit more entertaining.

Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but we'll try to have them fixed before we arrive. Thank you, and remember, nobody loves you, or your money, more than Southwest Airlines."

"Your seat cushions can be used for flotation; and, in the event of an emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with our compliments."

On matters of style, swim with the current; on matters of principle, stand like a rock.
