End of school

During my 12 years of primary and secondary education, I can remember only one school trip. The eighth grade from Mundys Corner, where I attended, and the eighth grade from Vinco went on an outing to Pittsburgh to the Zoo, the Carnegie Museum and the Phipps Conservatory. It should have been a very educational trip, but all I remember is an Anaconda at the Zoo and chasing after several of the Vinco girls with a buddy of mine. Even that was wasted time and energy. The girls were interested in boys but we weren't the boys they were interested in.

The excursion I most remember happened at the end of fourth grade when I was attending Jack Rager School. The building accommodated grades 3, 4, and 5. We had a terrible reputation and deserved it. During my fourth grade year, we went through 6 or 7 different teachers. By the end of the year, we had a teacher who had as rough a reputation as we did. She really didn't tame us, but by the last week of school we had reached certain understandings with her in order to gain such privileges as longer lunch and recess times.

On one day of the last week of school, she even let us out early. We could either wait at the school for our bus or walk home. A gang of us boys chose the latter and walked down Loraine Road, a circuitous route for most of us. When adults along the way asked us why we were out of school early, we boasted that we had locked the teacher in the building and left. Some of them, especially parents of other students who were familiar with our reputation, actually went up to Jack Rager School to check.

I don't remember any of us getting punished for that escapade, but we should have been.

Thought for the day

God is faithful—He is never going to be done with us; is shaping us and fashioning us as dear children of God until the day that we will see Him face to face!

Truly, in that gracious day, our rejoicing will not be in the personal knowledge that he saved us from hell, but in the joyful knowledge that He was able to renew us, bringing the old self to an end, and creating within us the new man and the new self in which can be reproduced the beauty of the Son of God!
