Good Morning Nanty Glo!
               Tuesday, July 30 2002

Two short items today. First, I've been informed that Nanty Glo's gazebo and it's attendant list of no-nos, especially a prohibition of loitering, has made national news. It's not extremely exceptional that the news made the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (though rare), but it was also spotted on CNN and in USA Today. Tempest in a teapot?

The second item is procedural. Saturday I begin a vacation trip with my sons, Mike, 28, and Kevin, 26. I made a similar trip with Mike last summer, giving him the airfare as his birthday present, then I "owed" the same to his brother, as soon as feasible. Mike enjoyed last year's trip so much he wanted to go again, first saying he'd join us en route, because he wanted to strike out for a visit to Paris. But with a word about economies of travelling together, he decided to join the whole tour at his own expense, on condition that we include Paris. He also agreed to be our chaffeur in Ireland, when we'll have a car rental for a week.

So, our itinerary is: overnight Saturday-Sunday morning to London; go on to Dublin on Tuesday, touring Ireland (mostly Northern Ireland) the next week, back to London by plane the following Tuesday and continuing on the Channel Tunnel high speed train for the three-hour trip to Paris. Then four days in Paris, returning to London after church on the final Sunday, to fly out of Heathrow back to San Francisco on Monday.

A final note: all our prayers were answered for the nine miners trapped in Somerset County. A favorite writer, Frederica Matthewes-Green, had some thoughts on the question, "Did God really save the miners?"

Etiquette for rednecks (series)

Crying babies should be taken to the lobby and picked up immediately after the movie has ended.

Refrain from talking to characters on the screen. Tests have proven they can't hear you.

17. You have to wonder about humans...they think God is dead and Elvis is alive!
18. It's all right to sit on your pity pot every now and again. Just be sure to flush every once in awhile.
19. You'll notice that a turtle only makes progress when it sticks out its neck.
20. If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, you can bet the water bill is higher.
