Mia culpa—a confession and apology;
more emailed page updates lost

I have to apologize again to a half dozen to a dozen users of the Home Page who recently sent changes to one of the several thousand pages here; as has happened before, some emails sent to us have been lost through a computer software failure. I was running about two weeks behind on making additions and changes to the Home Page when my email system failure occurred on January 21, so if you sent anything between January 7 and 21, please look at the page or index in which you'd expect to find it, to see if it has been added. If it isn't there, please forgive the error on our part and give us another chance by re-sending your change.

Here are the most common changes that have been lost:

I don't remember having other items flagged for future addition to the site, but if you do remember sending something not covered in that list, please let me know. I've put a link on each of the bulleted items above to make it easy for you to look for your changes; just click the bulleted line and it will take you to that index, which in turn will have a link to your specific page. Another clue: As a general practice, I usually notify every sender of an item when it is added to the site. If you haven't received such a notice about your most recent submission, it most likely has been lost.

This is intended as your home page. I have never intentionally declined to publish anything sent that was meant for the page (though it's conceivable that I might intentionally reject something, if it was inappropriate for family reading, for example, but that has not occurred). So please don't take it personally and, though I know it's an unwanted hassle, it is part of life with computers that sometimes things have to be done over.

What happened? Somehow I managed to delete the whole inbox of my main email program, Outlook Express. It contained thousands of letters received since I got the computer three years ago, which I was intentionally saving "just in case." A month or two ago, Hotmail, on which I was saving some incoming mail, arbitrarily emptied my whole (Hotmail only) mailbox, which I had no warning about and couldn't prevent, and at that time some previous submissions were lost. This time, however, I can't blame Microsoft (parent company of Hotmail). I often say that I do most of my work on computers by just "banging the software till I get the results I'm seeking." This time, apparently, when the email software seemed frozen, I banged it once too often and when I meant to delete only a score or so spam (unwanted advertising email) items, I deleted everything in that directory. And deleted email, unlike most deleted computer files, are not sent to the "trash" or recycle bin, so there was no recovering the loss.

Thought for the day

If instead of a gem, or even a flower, we should cast the gift of a loving thought into the heart of a friend, that would be giving as the angels give.
