David Caldwell's weekly roundup
of news affecting Blacklick Valley

Contract rejected

Employees of Johnstown America Corporation, successor of the former Bethlehem Car Works, unanimously rejected what the company said was its final contract offer. The once-vibrant company now employs fewer than a hundred workers and in the proposed contract they want to deny call-back rights to hundreds of former employees. This fact, plus the meager $2.20 wage hike offered in the five-year contract and other "give-aways," to quote many of the employees, explained the loud, unanimous "no" voice vote of the 600 present. The union negotiators are looking for more talks with the company. Thus far, the company is standing by its label of final-best-offer for the rejected contract.

The ad hoc Justice for Jackson committee isn't accepting defeat over the zoning ordinances approved by the Jackson Township supervisors in December 2001. Individuals have filed four different lawsuits asking for temporary and permanent injunctions against the ordinances. Unless or until the courts act, the newly passed ordinances are in effect.

The excellent photos submitted to the Nanty Glo Page this week by Judy Rose illustrate the significant snow the area received at the beginning of this week. The snow began Sunday morning as the residents made their way to church. The snow continued through the day and night and by Monday morning the road crews were not able to keep the highways cleared. As a result, all area schools delayed starting time by two hours. By the time the storm ended, more than a foot of snow blanketed the area. Then the temperatures warmed and by Friday most of the snow melted.

Water authority

At its January reorganization meeting, the Nanty Glo Water Authority re-elected Diane Holby as chairperson and Lynne Stock as vice chairperson. The Authority plans to meet with the Ebensburg Municipal Authority, which deals with both water and sewage, in January at Penn Gables to discuss mutual concerns. The DEP mandates that each municipality have an alternative water supply in case a disaster befall their primary source. The Nanty Glo Water Authority now supplies water to parts of Blacklick Township, Jackson Township, and Vintondale. Each of these municipalities will have to find an alternative water source to comply with the DEP.

Murtha will run

Twelfth Congressional District Representative John P. Murtha has stoically accepted his revamped district and plans to run for re-election in the fall. The national Democratic organization, Impact 2000, plans to challenge Pennsylvania's redistricting plan in court as being unconstitutional. Murtha does not plan to join the lawsuit.

Things to be thankful for

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it.

For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

When I'm feeling down, I like to whistle. It makes the neighbor's dog that barks all the time run to the end of his chain and choke himself.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

A penny saved is a government oversight.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat are really good friends.

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.

The news

I held my child as he nestled against my neck. But as I watched the news, I realized I was missing her loving gaze. Then it struck me: the child was the only news that truly mattered and that by watching the news I was missing my child. And my life.
