Where are they now?
Wes Hakanen

Born in Nanty Glo June 17, 1932, Wes was a hometown boy until his family moved to Turtle Creek, Pa., in 1944 just after Wes completed the 7th grade. After his 1951 graduation from Turtle Creek High School, Wes went on to serve three years in the U.S. Army, completing tours of duty at Fort Gordon, Ga., and in Germany.

Upon discharge from the military, Wes attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania where in 1962 he earned a Master's in education. He then went on to employment at the McKeesport Campus of Penn State University where he served as Administrator of Continuing Education while continuing his own education by earning a Ph. D. in education. After leaving Penn State University in 1988, he relocated to Edinborough, Pa., where he worked for Edinborough University until his retirement in 1991.

Wes has been married to his college sweetheart, the former Mimi Roberts of Leechburg, Pa., since September 10, 1958. They are the parents of three grown sons and are blessed with five grandchildren. Wes and Mimi currently make their home in Edinborough.

These days,Wes pursues his hobbies of working with stained glass and searching the geneology of his and Mimi's families. Wes has many fond memories of his childhood days in Nanty Glo...and one particular favorite was sled riding with friends down Roberts Street.

"What I miss most about Nanty Glo is family, and the comradery of being raised in a small town." Wes would be most grateful if anyone can provide him information on Hugo Palmonari and Ed Lezzer.

If you would like to say hello to Wes, he can be reached at: Wes.Hakanen@GTE.net.

More rimshots

Sally told her friend, "I was worried that my mechanic might try to rip me off, so I was relieved when he told me all I needed was a new car."

A stray rabid dog bit a neighbor of mine. I went to see how he was and found him writing furiously. I told him rabies could be cured and he didn't have to worry about a will. He said "Will, what will? I'm making a list of people I'm gonna bite.

May today there be peace within you. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
