Weather or whether not

Just when I'd begun to think our wintry front page photos were wearing thin in the crocusy Blacklick Valley spring David Caldwell described here on Saturday, I belatedly opened the UPJ webcam page on Monday afternoon to be jolted into a new reality. After blinking away the delusion that maybe the webcam page had been hacked by weather cyberterrorists but rather was a real representation of Richland Township conditions, I quickly checked the weather report on my own front page and saw 14 degrees Farenheit with more inclement white stuff being forewarned in an advisory. So much for global warming, at least for today.

Which brings up another point or two. I've been working on a new project, mentioned in the Christmas letter I posted to this list five or six weeks ago. As one of my friends cajoles, it's all I need to further occupy my already nonexistent free time. But it's one of those ideas that has to run its course or find its permanent place in this impermanent world. It's Xnmp, which stands for "Christian News and Media Portal," an Internet worldwide web portal. And though I'm nowhere near ready to go "public" with it and am not sure I ever will be ready, I'll enlist those of you on this 120-or-so-member list to be "beta testers" for it, any who may be so inclined.

The idea is to create a webpage that will be a portal to world news and backgrounders on the news with a few words of introduction on stories that encourage a biblical-ethical bit of reflection. As a longtime journalism student, both as practitioner as editor of newspapers and magazines and lecturer/writer on the "profession" or industry, who considers my higher calling trying to minister in my generation, I've wanted to do something like this for much of my life, and have done similar projects before, but recently became convinced that a webpage can be a very effective means to reach a new audience more effectively and economically.

Back to global warming...it happens that a story in yesterday's Washington Times came to my attention, claiming that one of the most influential scientists promoting the global warming fear has now pulled in his prognoses considerably, suggesting it's not as serious as we've been led to think, just when the skeptical among us had begun to wonder if there was doomsday behind all the noise. I don't pretend to have any definitive answer, but it's an issue of cosmic consequences, so good to get your mind around. So I added a link to that story on the slowly evolving portal page. You may check it out, along with the general idea, at http://www.xnmp.com.

Just ask a kid

After the church service a little boy told the pastor, "When I grow up, I'm going to give you some money."

"Well, thank you," the pastor replied, "but why?"

"Because my daddy says you're one of the poorest preachers we've ever had."

Thought for the Day

He was weak and wounded, but He cures all infirmity and all weakness. He was nailed to the wood and lifted up, but He restores us by the tree of life.... He dies, but He brings to life, and by His own death destroys death. He is buried, but He rises again. He descends into hell, but rescues the souls imprisoned there.
