Happy birthday

Something I have noticed about all our foster children. One of the first facts they want you to know about them is the date of their birth. One child in particular comes to mind when I think of this. She was a 7-year-old girl who came to us on January 3. She immediately informed us that her birthday was coming soon. She was mentally slow and couldn't remember the exact date but she was certain it was soon. Our caseworker came several days later with the pertinent paperwork we receive with information about our new child. A quick glance at the papers revealed the girl's birthday as November 16.

Other children have come to us not knowing the exact date of their birth but they always insisted that it would be soon. Well, after all these years, I finally agree with those children. Our birthdays come soon, all too soon, and they add up quickly.

Today is my 63rd birthday. It seems like only yesterday that I was in my twenties and thirties with no thought of ever being in my sixties. Now that I am older, I still feel and think the same as I did when I was younger. I can't imagine being in my seventies or eighties. However, I am sure it will beat the alternative, being dead.

My mother used to say, "Some people get older and wiser while others just get older." I am afraid that I fall into the later category, just getting older.

Punxsutawney Phil In case anyone missed the earth-shaking, meteorological news out of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, yesterday, world-famous Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. This means that we will definitely have six more weeks of winter weather. If you doubt Phil's prognostication, well, that's your decision. However, no one can question Phil's fame.

Just type Punxsutawney Phil into your favorite search engine and check out the results. The first one to come up for me was the Guardian Newspaper in England. More than 40,000 people braved the cold Pennsylvania morning to catch a glimpse of Phil. I doubt whether President Bush could draw such a large crowd so early on a winter morning.

Kids' ideas about marriage (last of a series)

IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?

I don't know which is better, but I'll tell you one thing. I'm never going to have sex with my wife. I don't want to be all grossed out.

—Theodore, age 8

It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them.

—Anita, age 9

HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED?

There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there?

—Kelvin, age 8

And the #1 Favorite is....

HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?

Tell your wife that she looks pretty even if she looks like a truck.

—Ricky, age 10
