David Caldwell's weekly roundup
of news affecting Blacklick Valley

Would you believe?

The Blacklick Valley and much of the northeast just came through a week in mid April with daytime temperatures averaging above 80 degrees. Monday also saw the area pounded with a severe thunderstorm that prompted warnings of flash floods and tornadoes. Instead of working to clean away the debris left by winter, residents are mowing grass, tilling gardens, and planting flowerbeds. Some brave souls are even taking the winter cover off their pools and adding chemicals to chase away the green monster that hibernated in the water over winter. Many have uncovered the outdoor grill and picnic tables and prepared for a season of backyard-barbecues. However, these brave people best proceed with caution. The weatherman predicts more seasonable temperatures next week, which means a drop of 20 to 30 degrees for daytime highs.

Penn Dot officials and county, state and local politicians gathered in Belsano Friday, April 12, for a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction work that had already been underway in the community. The project will change the intersection of routes 271 and 422 from a Y to a T type intersection. Route 422 will be widened and straightened in the area of the old C&I overpass. Then a stressed-concrete beam will be placed over the highway to accommodate the C&I Trail that will meet with the Ghost Town trail.... On a much less positive note for Belsano, vandals desecrated the EUB Cemetery. Taken and or destroyed were wreathes, flower vases and urns, and statuary.

Primary election

Pennsylvania's spring primary remains in a state of limbo because of the controversy over the Republican redistricting plan for the 12th congressional district. The District Court set aside the plan as not giving fair and equal representation. The Republicans have now appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Should the Supreme Court uphold the redistricting plan, the spring primary will be held as scheduled. However, should the Supreme Court allow the lower court decision to stand, the primary will have to be postponed until a new plan is drawn up and approved. Meanwhile, the politicians keep politicking.

Notes to God

A parochial school teacher asked her class to write notes to God. Here are some of the notes the children handed in:

Dear God: Did you mean for the giraffe to look like that, or was it an accident?

Dear God: Who draws the lines around the countries?

Dear God: I went to this wedding and they kissed right in the church. Is that okay?

Dear God: Did you really mean, "do unto others as they do unto you"? Because if You did, then I'm going to get my brother good.

Thought for the day

...if I can share any wisdom with you at all it would be this: the only thing that gets me through these hard times is to give. Just give for the sake of sharing and not for what you can get for it. When you feel down or trapped. . .get outside of yourself and do something nice for someone. Doing something before you are asked to do it. Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. Helping someone in need. Going the extra mile. This is a great cure for sadness, anxiety, and self-obsession.
