of news affecting Blacklick Valley

Zoning

Zoning continues to be a controversial subject in Jackson Township. Those against any new ordinances fear the restrictions while those who favor them see them as protective. An ad hoc citizens committee is circulating a petition protesting the adoption of any zoning regulations. Some homeowners fear that they will lose the right to make modifications to existing houses or to build out buildings when needed for storage or other reasons. There is also a concern that residents would be restricted in adapting their homes should the need arise to add a wheelchair ramp. Persons with home-based businesses have concerns. Although their enterprises are covered by a grandfather clause, they would not be able to expand their business nor sell it. On the other hand, many homeowners see zoning as a means of protecting the value of their property by keeping the noise and pollution of commercial/industrial expansion out of residential areas. The Jackson Township Water Authority has unanimously come out in favor of the proposed zoning regulations. They reason that knowing which regions of the township are residential and which are industrial will greatly aid them in planning future water expansion projects. Although many township residents are against any zoning regulations, they are inevitable because the supervisors are bowing to the mandate of state and county governing bodies that are calling for all municipalities to formulate zoning laws. Through their input, the residents can influence the way those laws are written.

Sewage Bills

The Nanty Glo Sewer Authority is considering a change in the way sewage charges are levied. Currently, residential and commercial customers have a set fee. They are looking into the possibility of charging according to the amount of water a customer uses. To do this, they would have to have the cooperation of the Nanty Glo Water Authority, which is a separate entity. They would also have to have arrangements with the Jackson Township Water Authority, since some of their customers are connected to the Nanty Glo sewer system. The proposal still needs a lot of planning before a change in the billing method is made.

Local Aid

The Blacklick Valley Schools conducted a nickel campaign to raise money to help the people of New York with disaster relief. The students collected $690.15.

Vandalism

The Blacklick Township Supervisors have put up a $500 reward to catch the vandals who damaged the gazebo in Dr. Prideaux Parkin Twin Rocks.

Three to go on

1. Birds of a feather flock together, and bomb your car.

2. There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

3. When I'm feeling down, I like to whistle. It makes the neighbor's dog run to the end of his chain and choke himself.
