David Caldwell's weekly roundup
of news affecting Blacklick Valley

Big Weekend We didn't get to the Vintondale Homecoming but we know it ended with a bang, or better yet, a lot of bangs. From our home, five to six miles from Vintondale, we could clearly hear their fireworks.

The Forest Hills Festival in St. Michael began Saturday and ended on Monday, Labor Day. Sunday evening was the night of their big fireworks. This festival with its many craft and food vendors had its best year yet.

Without a doubt, the biggest Labor Day weekend celebration is the Folk Festival in Johnstown. The big draw here, too, are the food and craft vendors. People had to stand in long lines to get access to some of the food booths and several of the vendors ran out of food. Most of the local churches and civic organizations use this festival as a major fundraising event. They provide a wide variety of ethnic foods. Many groups perform each day.

The 110th Cambria County Fair opened on August 2. We attended the fair on Monday, Labor Day. One of the first comments from a fair employee was that the Sunday opening day was poorly attended. He blamed the growing popularity of the Forest Hills Festival and the Johnstown Folk Festival for the drop in fair attendance. We also noted many more unoccupied booths and an absence of many local businesses that set up displays in the past. We also noticed fewer animals in the barns. We did find a few more food vendors than in past years. Monday's perfect weather helped make up for the poor start. When we left the Fair Grounds around 4 p.m., all the parking lots were full and cars were lining up along the roads.

Zoning The Jackson Township supervisors are under a lot of pressure from local citizens over the issue of zoning. Private citizens and business owners alike know how important zoning can be in the growth of residential and business areas. Both groups voiced their opinions at the supervisors' meeting this past week. The supervisors assured those in attendance that their decision is some time off and they will put any plans before the public prior to making any final decisions.

More theology by Woody Allen

In his film Love and Death, Boris Grushenko (Woody) asks Sonya (Diane Keaton), "What if there is no God? What if we're just a bunch of absurd people who are running around with no rhyme or reason?"

Sonya replies: "But if there is no God, then life has no meaning. Why go on living? Why not just commit suicide?"

Boris, somewhat flustered, says: "Well, let's not get hysterical. I could be wrong. I'd hate to blow my brains out and then read in the papers they found something."

You can preach a better sermon with your life than with your lips.
