Airport Closing The Ebensburg Borough Council voted this past week, in a hotly debated session, to announce to the FAA their intention to close the Ebensburg Municipal Airport by January 1. The five members voting for closure noted dwindling use and the financial drain on the borough budget. They also pointed to a survey of borough residents that indicated a two-thirds majorityfavor closing the airport. Foremost, though, in their decision was the fact that a Johnstown appraiser set the commercial development value of the 115-acre site at $2.6 million. The two members opposing closing the airport noted that the borough hasn't invested any money to improve the facility in many years. They also pointed out an FAA study that showed a need for the development of smaller airports to ease the strain of commuter traffic on metropolitan airports. Principal Hired The Blacklick Valley School Board hired a Patton native, Luke Lansberry, as principal of the Blacklick Valley Elementary School. Mr. Lansberry began his duties on July 1. He replaces Kenneth Martinazzi who retired this year after a 37-year career with the local school district. Mr. Martinazzi taught for 22 years and served 15 years as principal of the elementary school. William Run Reservoir Okay As noted here last week, central Pennsylvania is well below its yearly average of rainfall. Many local water authorities have issued first-stage drought alerts. The Nanty Glo Water Authority announced this week that the William Run Reservoir is down only 13 inches, which means that it has a good reserve. In addition to supplying water for Nanty Glo residents, the authority sells water to Jackson Township, Vintondale and Twin Rocks. The authority does caution against the frivolous usage of water since the usual fall rains and winter snows are several months away. |
