'Anthrax' scares here, too

Cambria and Somerset Counties have not escaped the threats of anthrax poisoning that are sweeping the nation. The Planned Parenthood agencies of both counties have received letters containing an unknown powder and threatening words. Both turned out to be hoaxes. Additional threats and scares at other locations have forced all to be extra cautious when opening mail. For instance, the public relations director for the Altoona School District uses rubber gloves and a mask when opening suspicious-looking letters and packages.

Aftermath of Flight 93

A would-be robber entered the pharmacy department of a Johnstown supermarket and demanded a bag full of the drug Oxycontin. As the thief ran out of the store, an employee tackled the man and soon another employee joined in the arrest. The two kept the robber on the ground until the police arrived. This is just another example of private citizens springing into action since the heroic deeds of the passengers on Flight 93.

Rainfall shortage

In spite of a day of rain this past week, our area is still behind its average rainfall for the year. The community of Bakerton is dramatically feeling the shortage of water. The town's reservoir is down 90 percent. Community officials are looking to truck in water until they can get help through a water line being connected to the Carrolltown water system.

Weather

Several severe frosts and two days of strong wind have taken away most of the beautiful, autumn leaves. The birds are giving us the message of winter coming. They are gathering in large numbers and heading south. The weather forecasters have told us to expect a colder-than-usual winter, with above-average snowfalls. Hopefully, they are wrong.

Brunette joke

A young brunette goes into the doctor's office and tells him that her body hurts anywhere she touches it. "Impossible," says the doctor. "Show me." She takes her finger and pushes on her elbow and screams in agony. She then pushes on her knee and screams, pushes on her ankle and screams...and so it goes. No matter where she touches her agony is apparent. The doctor says,"You're not really a brunette, are you? You're really a blonde." She sheepishly admits that indeed she is a blonde. "I thought so," he says. "Your finger is broken."
