Anniversary thoughts

Last month the Nanty Glo Home Page ended four years of uninterrupted online publication. As of this week, the "lucky number" is 1414. That's the number of pages on the site indexed this week by Freefind and it adds up to just under a page per day put on the site for the four years. Except for travel features, they all pertain to Nanty Glo, Vintondale, Blacklick Township, Cambria County and the Nantyglo-Blaina, Wales, communities.

Though the Page is registered as "commercial" (hence the "com" in our name) and though I have nothing against advertising, the only advertising on any of those 1414 pages is in support of worthy nonprofit causes in the Valley, primarily the Nant-Y-Glo Tri-Area Museum and Historical Society (memberships and fundraising products) and also the Blacklick Township Sesquicentennial (souvenir sales). That advertising is donated by the Home Page and no commissions are received on any sales they may generate.

It is my hope that someday someone will join the project to sell advertising to make the enterprise viable after its founder has to cut back or give up his maintenance of this labor of love. And, frankly, I fear that competing commercial web enterprises claiming to "serve" Blacklick Valley will siphon advertising support that should be supporting the Valley to outside benefactors. I do not, however, want to undercut the viability of the Nanty Glo Journal, which is one of the valley's most venerable institutions.

In closing this paean to the enterprise so dear to my heart, some thanks to those who support it in various ways: David Caldwell who writes the weekend entries in the Postcard pages; his wife, Pat, who contributes excellent photographs of valley sites and sights; George Dilling who has contributed many pages of reminiscences of his 73 years as a Nanty Glo resident; Brandon Williamson who contributed the best photo tour of Nanty Glo and some free consulting; Judy and Hobe Rose for their coverage of the Reunion Record Hop this summer and this season's foliage photos; Frank Charney who has been our most frequent Forum correspondent and has contributed information for many of our pages; Rob James, Jeff Jones, the late Trevor Rowson, and Gwenllian O'Neill for making our sister Wales/UK page possible; Barbara Lindsay Hakanen for the Historical-Museum Society information and pages; Bill Martin and Betty Nedrich for their historical background pages; "Frodor," who contributed last year's excellent Christmas lights tour; Denise Weber, who has been our Vintondale expert and contributed valuable birth and death records of the early years of the past century; Trudy Rummel Myers, who has contributed Forum pages on growing up in Belsano, Halloween in the Valley, and a Mother's Day tribute to her mother; Michelle Cruley for the photos of the historic Reed Farm at Belsano; Dwight Burkhart for initiating the Moose pages; Paul Ceria, Shirley Bracken Kozlovac, Linda Watson Silbaugh, Fran Wojtowicz Ward, Ruth Troutman, Ray Hunter, Walt Cameron, Michael Kaschalk, Phyllis LaMantia Grembi, and Tim McCullough for their contributions to several pages, including Tim's recent addition remembering the Attack on America; Ron Weekes, who has contributed many items, ideas, and lots of moral support; Joseph Kozlovac for his Johnstown Floods study; everyone (too numerous to remember) who contributed names for their high school class pages (and especially those who contributed class lists for classes they weren't even in!); Beth Mazman for a collection of school photos from yearbooks; everyone who has sent a letter to the Forum (its collection of 263 published letters is one of the things I'm most proud of and has been the main impetus for keeping up the work); the late Tom Hawksworth for his letters, historic photos, and other contributions our first year...and though I had no idea how many had contributed so much, I'm sure I've missed some...inadvertently I assure you...please remind me and I'll add your mention here; everyone who subscribes to the eForum (this list)....

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Three to grow older on (series of 12)

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because, by then, your body and your fat are really good friends.

Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness.

The terrible thing about terrorism is that it ultimately destroys those who practice it.
