of news affecting Blacklick Valley

Election results

The election in Nanty Glo held no suspense since all who ran had no opposition. The voters approved the following to office: Tom Cunningham, mayor; Thomas Kupchella, councilman from the second ward; Patricia Lamantia and William stevens, councilmembers for the first ward, and Judy Sherwood, tax-collector. The Jackson Township voters elected Bill Headrick as supervisor and elected as a write-in-candidate for supervisor, Robert Stevens. Local voters chose Mary Ann Rosenbaun Zanghi to fill the post of District Magistrate at the office in Vinco. Mrs. Zanghi formerly worked in the magistrate's office for retiring Justice, Alfred Coleman.

Water authority

Diane Holby, Chair of the Nanty Glo Water Authority, reported that State Representative John Wozniak has won a Legislative-Incentive Grant for the Authority. The $70,000 will enable the Authority to install an 8-inch water line to improve water pressure for the community of Revloc. The estimated cost of the project is $100,000 and the Authority says it can come up with the $30,000 to have the job done. The work will begin next year. The Authority recently met with the Johnstown Water Authority to discuss area water needs. Ebensburg needs more water to handle the industrial and commercial expansion in progress along route 22. The two boards have a tentative plan that would have Nanty Glo supply water to Ebensburg since the distance isn't too great and Johnstown would supply water to Jackson Township, thus freeing up water that the Nanty Glo Water Authority now supplies to the township. Jackson would still pay Nanty Glo for its water and Nanty Glo would then settle with Johnstown. This complicated plan would have to undergo a lot of legal scrutiny before going into effect.

The fifth-grade students, their teachers and principal Luke Lansberry of the Blacklick Elementary School, joined in a project to landscape around the front of the building. Mr. Lansberry came up with the idea shortly after assuming his position at the beginning of this school year. He employed the help of his sister, a freelance landscape-designer with a business in Ashville and he persuaded Lowe's in Altoona to sell the district a load of shrubs at a 75 percent discount. The School Board approved and paid for the project and the work was done on October 30, 31 and November 1. The fall plantings will add greatly to the beauty of the school, come next spring.

The case for chocolate - III

Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look younger. Therefore, you need to eat more chocolate.

Put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you'll get one thing done.

A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Now, isn't that handy?

Advent thought for the day

All of us are the people who put Christ to death, the daily executioners of love. And Christ loves us and, when put to death by us, offers us resurrection.
