David Caldwell's weekly roundup
of news affecting Blacklick Valley

Bank merger The planned merger of Promise Star Bank and First National Bank (FNB) will finally take place early next year. As with other mergers, jobs will be lost because of duplication of duties. The majority of Promise Star's employees are tellers in local banks. These jobs will remain. The jobs that will be eliminated are in the corporate offices and the headquarters for Promise Star is in Johnstown. The current fear is that as many as 150 people will lose their jobs. This will just add to the employment woes of Cambria County.

Halloween The Halloween parades of both Nanty Glo and Jackson Township held on Saturday, October 26, had fewer marchers this year than in past years because of the weather. Many of the ghosts and goblins appeared long enough to get a treat, then disappeared into the family car to watch the more hardy march by. Those who waited till Halloween Day had much better weather in which to do their trick and treating.

Vintondale project The Acid Mine Drainage and ART Park in Vintondale, the brainchild of Dr. Comp, was dedicated on October 26. The cold, snowy weather forced the ceremony to move inside. The project consists of six ponds and a wetland habitat. The ponds and wetlands are rather dry to date, because of the area's drought conditions. Many state and local agencies have helped in the project, which has received global recognition. Much work remains to complete the art and historical portions of the project. The ponds and wetlands will help to improve the water quality of the Blacklick Creek.

Playground dedicated The Arthur C. Price Playground, at the site of the former Wagner School, was dedicated on October 26. The former mayor had long lobbied for a playground in that neighborhood. A class of math honors students at the Blacklick Valley Junior Senior High School initiated the project. The students raised $21,000 for the project and Nanty Glo Borough Council applied for and received a grant for $21,000 to complete the financing of the playground equipment. In addition, many citizens and a few businesses provided volunteer labor. Borough Council president, Doctor Thomas Kupchella, noted that the playground project is a good example of what can be accomplished when many people work together toward a common goal.

Great truths about life that adults have learned

Families are like fudge...mostly sweet, with a few nuts.
Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
Raising teenagers is like nailing Jell-O to a tree.
If you can remain calm, you don't have all the facts.
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's acorn that held its ground.
My mind not only wanders; sometimes it leaves completely.
One reason to smile is that every seven minutes of every day, someone in an aerobics class pulls a hamstring.
God put me on earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now, I am so far behind I'll live forever.

Thought for the day

Common sense and faith are as different from each other as the natural life is from the spiritual, and as impulsiveness is from inspiration. Nothing that Jesus Christ ever said is common sense, but is revelation sense, and is complete, whereas common sense falls short.
