A note from cyberspace

How can it be that facing my computer in the "wrong" direction can be a source of writer's block or waning imagination? Here on my first day after the loss of my high-powered "work" laptop and resorting back again to just an ordinary laptop that has been my principle PC for over two years now, everything seems different. More difficult.

The reason I'm facing the "wrong" direction is I used to have both computers set up in my room/office each on its own little desk, facing each other, and I sat between them and did different tasks on each. One of those tasks was doing the Jonal entries on the work laptop, now gone. Facing the "other" direction. And as I feared, it's not as easy now. But it's not, I hope, impossible, either. We'll see.

Yesterday I said I'd check out another online music file sharing web page, Gutella, when I got to the office and got connected on the high-speed Internet access there. But when I got to the office I was told I could take the rest of the day off with pay to celebrate my last day on the job. So Gutella remains untried. Maybe soon I'll get another chance, from another, new work connection.

Son Mike and I went to the local computer store after he got off work this afternoon, to get some recordable CDs, and while there checked out the new generation of laptops. I'm drooling, and we're both impressed at how much more computer you can buy now for what we spent two years ago and even less.

It's been that way every two years for a decade or more now. Two years seems like a whole generation in PC reckoning. If you want to keep up, you have to move up to an ever-more-powerful machine. The big thing now is video editing; I'm waiting for a price breakthrough. We put our first and only video clip on the Home Page nearly two years ago, but it's too large. Better software would compress it more and put more scenery in less cyberspace and show it quicker (requiring less time to start and "buffer") than that one does.

Poco a poco.

Imprinted traits

A three-year-old went with his dad to see a litter of kittens. On returning home, he breathlessly informed his mother that there were two boy kittens and two girl kittens.

"How did you know?" his mother asked.

"Daddy picked them up and looked underneath," he replied. "I think it's printed on the bottom."
