Looking up

Over the past several weeks and continuing into this week, a number of streets in Nanty Glo are being paved. This is a wonderful development for those of us who have to travel the streets on a daily basis. For the benefit of you who live in other states, Nanty Glo's streets during the past year have gone from being an obstacle course with deep open trenches to being like a washboard all winter. The sidewalks were also dug up in places and at times were impassable.

The scars created by the sewer project have been repaired, although many of Nanty Glo's sidewalks still need a lot of work. I deliberately did not mention the problems in my posts to the Nanty Glo Jonal even though the construction at times forced me to detour or even cancel my daily walks. I have done enough construction to know that it is usually necessary to go through a lot of mess and inconvenience before positive results can be seen.

Besides, Nanty Glo gets enough local bad publicity without me spreading it over the Internet. Strict environmental laws necessitate that communities, both small and large, have a good sewage system before any growth, residential or industrial, can take place. Nanty Glo is now well on the way to having an up-to-date sewage system.

Nanty Glo has a good water supply and now the streets are being paved. These infrastructure elements are a good stepping-stone to future development. And the flood control project lessens the chances of future flooding of the central business district.

Things are looking up.

A Christian (second of two parts):

  • knows that the opponents of Christ (illegitimate rulers, power-loving members of the hierarchy, fanatical supporters of the past), are to be found not only in the Gospel period but reappear under various guises at any time in history (Matt. 16:6);
  • guards against authoritarianism and paternalism, which are rooted not in the spirit of faith but in characteristics inherent to the fallen nature of humanity (Matt. 20:25-27, 23:8-12);
  • experiences the divisions among Christians as a sin that is common to all and a violation of Christ's will (John 10:16); believes that in the future this sin will be overcome not by a sense of superiority, pride, complacency, or hatred, but rather through a spirit of brotherly love without which the Christian calling cannot be fulfilled (Matt. 5:23-24);
  • treats the works of art of the church over the centuries not as a mistake but as a way of realizing God's gifts.
