Good Morning Nanty Glo!

It's radio, Dadio

Continuing the current topic, pop music, today a thought about its presentation. To me, radio works better than any other presentation format. Perhaps Lisa Bee was getting at a similar thought when she expressed her preference for radio over television. But my preference for radio is over recorded media like tapes or CD's. The radio playing a favorite can give me a rush of recognition, adrenalin, and joy all at once. Playing the same song on my own tape or CD has no surprise value; the song's presence on the medium I put in the player was one of the reasons I chose it.

I know when I'm hearing a song on the radio that a broad audience of other listeners are sharing the experience. They may not appreciate it as much as I do, but still it's a shared experience.

A pink and black 1955 convertible—a Fairlane from Castelli Ford in Nanty Glo—is driving by Blacklick Township High School during lunch hour on a balmy September day, my sophomore year. The driver is a recent graduate or dropout of Vintondale or Nanty Glo High School, a pretty blonde—a Twin Rocks girl—snuggled against his shoulder. "Earth Angel," by the Penguins via WCRO-Johnstown, is blaring so loudly everyone within a quarter of a mile away can hear it clearly. The driver intends that; everyone hearing it knows he does. That's the quintessential shared musical moment. It will echo in the listeners' memories for a half a century...maybe more.

Two for one

Both the funny and the inspiration are both served by today's entry:

  • Conscience is what hurts when everything else feels so good.
  • Talk is cheap because supply exceeds demand.
  • Stupidity got us into this mess—why can't it get us out?
  • Love is grand; divorce is a hundred grand.
  • Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.
  • An optimist thinks that this is the best possible world. A pessimist fears that this is true.
